Father of Vedic Mathematics – Jagadguru Shankaracharya Bharati Krishna Tirthaji Maharaja is regarded as one of the most prominent spiritual figures of the twentieth century, best recognized for his work on Vedic Mathematics not only in India but throughout the world. He is also popularly called the “Father of Vedic Maths.”

Early Age of Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha

Originally named Venkataraman Shastri, he was born on March 14th, 1884 in Tinnevelly, Madras Presidency, during British India to a Tamil Brahmin family. His father, P. Narasimha Shastri, was a tehsildar in Tirunelveli before becoming the Deputy Collector of the Presidency.

The Father of Vedic Maths (Venkataraman Shastri) was a brilliant student who attended colleges all around India for his education.

  • He initially joined the National College for his basic education in Trichinopoly before moving to the Church Missionary Society College and the Hindu College, both in Tirunelveli.
  • He passed the Madras University matriculation exam in January 1899.
  • At the age of 18, he passed the B.A. examination in 1902.
  • In 1903, he took the MA exam at the Mumbai Center of the American College of Sciences in Rochester, New York.
  • He earned a Master’s (MA) degree in six fields when he was only 20 years old, including Sanskrit, English, history, philosophy, mathematics, and science.

Achievements of Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha

  • He received the title of “Saraswati” from the Sanskrit Association of Madras in July 1899 for his overall proficiency and skill in oratory in Sanskrit.
  • He received the top score in the B.A. examination in 1902.
  • He went into intense meditation from 1911 to 1919, devoting his body, mind, heart, and soul to the causes of serving humanity, promoting spiritual enlightenment, and reviving Vedantic principles.
  • In 1919, he was given the new name Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha and was admitted into the holy Sannyasa order in Varanasi.
  • He was elected the Shankaracharya of Sharada Peetha in 1921, and four years later, in 1925, he attained the highest religious title in India by becoming a Shankaracharya.

Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha is credited with reconstructing the ancient Vedic Mathematics system during his years of meditation using some Sanskrit writings and Hindu scriptures known as the Vedas. Then, he made a collection of discoveries, known as Vedic Maths tricks, that can be used to efficiently and accurately solve difficult mathematical problems. He condensed his discoveries into 16 sutras, or formulas, and 13 sub sutras, or sub-formulas, which encompass all areas of mathematics. Therefore, he is also considered the founder of Vedic Maths due to his extremely important findings and intense study.

The contribution of Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha to Vedic Mathematics is enormous.
