What is the New National Education Policy 2020?
The NEP, National Education Policy 2020, is the first education policy of the 21st century. It is a comprehensive framework that lays emphasis on early childhood care and education. In this blog, we will analyze the updates in the National Education Policy, and how the curriculum of ALLEN IntelliBrain programmes are fully aligned with it.
To begin with, the NEP 2020 includes 12 years of schooling with three years of pre-schooling. The age breakup in the earlier policy was 6-16 years (Grades 1 to 10) and 16-18 years age group (Grades 11 and 12), which was the 10+2 system. However, now the age breakup has changed to 3-8, 8-11, 11-14, and 14-18 years, which is called the 5+3+3+4 system.
NEP 2020 Structure
Let us understand the new system in detail:
Stage 1 (5 years): It is the foundational stage. The kids in the age group between 3 to 8 years fall in this category. It brings the kids of the age group 3 to 8 years under the school curriculum, as this age group is the most crucial period for the mental development of the kids. The first three years of a kid at a preschool or playschool and kindergarten are included in this stage. Kids studying in grades 1 or 2 are also added in this stage to keep pace with their language skills, basic concepts, and activity curriculum.
Stage 2 (3 years): It is the Preparatory stage. It includes students from grades 3rd to 5th. Their age group ranges from 8 to 11 years. Until Grade 8, the students can be taught in either mother tongue or their regional language. There are no limitations.
Stage 3 (3 years): It is considered the middle stage and includes students studying from classes sixth to eighth. Coding Languages will be taught from the 6th standard onwards so as to develop critical thinking skills. It promotes experiential learning, learning in sciences, mathematics, social studies, and arts.
Stage 4 (4 years): This is the Secondary stage. It comprises classes from ninth to twelfth and includes a multidisciplinary course where students can pick any combination of subjects they want to study.

Modification in the pedagogy: The National Education Policy 2020 has overhauled the teaching methodologies in several ways, some of which are highlighted below:
No rigid separation between streams: All streams, such as arts, science, and commerce will be considered a whole, and the student will have the flexibility to choose a particular set of subjects combined from all the streams. According to the NEP 2020, the institutions will now follow a multidisciplinary approach. If a student wants to study fashion designing with physics or if one wants to pursue chemistry with psychology, they can do so.
Vocational education: The policy focuses on bringing vocational education into mainstream education so as to encourage the students to have insight into their hidden talents, and will also prepare them with the basic skills required for a job.
Progress card: Report cards are re-designed to make them 360 degrees holistic. They’ll no longer be based on the marks achieved on theoretical subjects only. They will also include ‘credit points’ for participating or engaging in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Moreover, it promotes formative assessments to test the critical thinking and overall development of the kids.
The nep education system is likely to escalate multidisciplinary education, making it more accessible for students to make the career of their choice in a highly competitive world.
